Marieke Lucas Rijneveld: Ripe For The Picking

This week’s Friday Verses are written by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, one of the greatest new talents in Dutch literature and in 2020 the first Dutch winner ever of the prestigious International Booker Prize. We asked Michele Hutchison to translate Plukhoogte (Ripe For the Picking) from Rijneveld’s newest collection of poetry Komijnsplitsers (The Cumin-splitters). In 2015, Marieke Lucas Rijneveld (Nieuwendijk, b. 1991) debuted with the poetry collection Kalfsvlies (Calf’s Caul), which was awarded the C. Buddingh’ Prize for best poetry debut. His second collection of poetry, Fantoommerrie (Phantomare), was published in 2019 and won the Ida Gerhardt Poetry Prize.

Rijneveld’s debut novel De avond is ongemak (The Discomfort of Evening, 2018) garnered exceptional praise and was awarded the International Booker Prize 2020. In 2020 Rijnevelds second novel was published, Mijn lieve gunsteling (My Heavenly Favourite), and got also rave reviews. The book was shortlisted for the Libris Literature Prize and was awarded the F. Bordewijk Prize 2021.

Komijnsplitsers (The Cumin-splitters) is his newest collection of poetry, in which Rijneveld explores what it means to be home: in a house, within oneself, and in relation to others.
